A visitor belongs to the day they were first ever seen on this site, not the first day they appear in this window — so somebody who has been coming for a year is not counted as newly acquired.
Retention needs returning visitors to be recognised
This site stores nothing on its visitors' devices, so it needs no cookie banner — and nobody can be recognised from one day to the next. Retention follows one person across days, so there is nothing here to show.
To use it, turn on Recognise returning visitors in this site's Analytics settings — which means running a consent banner, because it stores an id in the visitor's browser. Every other report works either way.
